Dear Julia,

Happy graduation! I am so unbelievably proud of you for surviving four full years at Caltech and graduating with an impressive degree in physics. From the first time I met you there during spring break of our freshman year I knew you were going to have an entirely unique experience. We went to a Jurassic Park themed party where the students had constructed a life-size model of a t-rex. This was not your typical “college” experience, but you would make it your own in time. You brought so much more to the school than just your intellect; you brought your amazing personality and an ability to light up a room like no one else.

You’ve gone through so many tough times during the last four years and there have been too many times that I have wanted to fly out to save you. That being said,  there have also been countless good times. You’ve made so many great friends, learned soooo much, and definitely left your unique Juju mark on the school.

I am so excited to be able to begin the next chapter of our lives together. You are going to make the most amazing teacher for Teach for America and we are going to absolutely kill it in the city. I am so incredibly lucky to have you as my twin. You are my rock and my best friend.

Own that stage today, Juju. Be thankful for the chapter you’ve just completed and look forward to your future with a bright smile.

Yours forever,

Cat

you can do the thing

Quite honestly, this week has been kind of rough for me so far. After an awesome weekend, it was difficult to get back into the swing of things and I definitely felt my anxiety flare up a bit. I am the first to admit that I am prone to stressing — my famous family quote growing up was always, “I’m a little bit nervous” — but with so many new things on the horizon, I think my subconscious anxiousness got the better of me. Naturally I turned to my sister for support. Julia has helped me through countless anxiety issues in the past and her best remedy has always been sending my the most adorable pictures (and hilarious pins!). On Monday Julia sent me this photo:

Is it not the best?! Honestly, it cheered me right up and whenever I feel my adrenaline picking up again, I just take a quick peek at it on my phone. I am so lucky to have such supportive friends and family by my side during this time of so many changes. Thanks again, Juju!

the addiction

Have you heard of the iPhone game 2048? I was first introduced to the app during my spring break when I watched my twin sister stay up until the wee hours of the night playing it, but I didn’t understand the addiction. NOW I DO.

The game essentially has you slide numbers around a 4×4 matrix, combining like numbers until you reach the ultimate goal of 2048. Once you hit that, you can continue on to try to get even greater numbers! The cool thing about the app is that if you don’t reach 2048 (which oftentimes you don’t because every time you swipe across the board a new number (2 or 4) drops into the matrix, so eventually it fills up) the game still tracks your “score” (don’t ask me how they find that…) so that you know if you’re doing your best yet or better than your friends — hehehe!

The game is SOOOO addicting. I forgot to eat dinner the other night because I was so sucked into it… yeah, that happened. If you don’t have the app yet, proceed with caution. If you do, have you hit 2048 yet??

Last week my sister decided to agree to do Teach for America for two years after she graduates this June. Her ultimate life goal is to obtain a PhD in theoretical physics and pursue a career in academia, but when faced with the option of either diving into graduate school right away or taking a few years to give back and learn in a real-world setting, she chose the latter. I am so, so proud of her! Not only will she be nobly (and I think quite successfully) helping disadvantaged students, but she will be doing so in the best city in the world WITH ME! I can’t even express how excited I am to have Julia down in New York with me for two years. When I signed my job contract in the fall I did so knowing full well that my twin city plans might ultimately fall through and, to be honest, for quite a while it looked like they were going to do just that! But now the fates have favored us yet again and its seems that maddening and majestic Manhattan will continue to be our twin thing. I, of course, can’t help but already brainstorm ideas for our apartment… I know searching for something within our just-out-of-school budgets will be a pain, but a girl can dream!

these windows are just fantastic -- definitely a charming little feature that we could find in older apartments

Last week I spent my spring break down in Naples, Florida with Julia and The Boy. Simply put, it was an absolutely magical week. The weather reached 80 degrees nearly every day and the colors of the ocean and sky were more vibrant than anything I have seen in months. It’s tough to be back in rainy Schenectady when this is what our schedule looked like on a typical day:

10am – Wake up and have a delicious breakfast on the balcony with the bay to our left and the Gulf to our right

11am – Head down to the beach and walk along the shore finding magnificent shells

12pm – Read in the sun while working on our tans

2pm – Go back to the house for a quick bite to eat and get a little break from the rays

3pm – Lounge by the pool diving into more chapters

6pm – Shower off the sand and salt and get gussied up!

7pm – Have a delicious dinner that makes for hours of awesome conversation

9pm – Watch some TV/read while reclining on the world’s most comfortable couch

11pm – Hit the hay dreaming about another awesome day!

I’ve been on plenty of fantastic vacations over the last four years while in college, but this on was by far the fastest. It’s frightening because today is the first day of my last trimester of college. In just 10 short weeks I will be graduated and I know the term is going to disappear in a heartbeat. Follow me the whole time and wish me luck!

morning, noon, & night

mnnThis spring break I will be headed down to Florida to visit my grandma and meet up with my twin sister who also has her spring break at the same time! I am so looking forward to the warm weather (remember Monday’s post?) and already brainstorming awesome outfits for some fun in the sun. I think this bright and blue collection would be perfect for a day down south. A casual tank and shorts for errands in the morning, a cute dress for an afternoon snack, and a flow-y frock and a classic jean jacket for a breezy night walking in the sand. Anyone else have fun plans for their spring break this year?

comfy casual

My sister knows how to rock a great outfit (see here), but the other day she sported a particularly incredible comfy-casual look that I just had to write about. Her simple baseball tee paired with a tight, dark blue mini skirt works perfectly for a lunch out on the town. Add to that some wonderful gold accessories and an easy cross-body bag and you’re ready for some post-sandwich shopping!
